in the blink of an eye

The streets were covered in light snow as I drove to work this morning. I think it was around 6:10 am when I got on I-69. Everyone was driving a little more defensively since the roads were slick. I was going at just under 60 mph, business as usual as I thought. The traffic is usually quite light before 7 am. Just as I drove near my favorite electronics store – Fry’s, I saw a flurry of red lights.

An SUV apparently tried to shoot three lane across to the exit had spun out of control. It happened so quickly but fortunately no other vehicles were involved in this accident. Luckily for the driver, the SUV, didn’t roll over as it very well could have. The SUV skidded off the road shoulder and ended up in a ditch about 100′ away from the road.

I don’t know if the driver was talking on the phone, texting someone, sipping on coffee but whatever it was, caused the driver to miss the exit. I don’t think the driver would be able to get out of the ditch without any assistance. If you miss an exit, take the next one. There is no reason to jeopardize everyone’s safety with a stupid stunt like that. I do hope that driver had learned a valuable lesson this morning. Use common sense, people!

Wife

On this special day of yours, I want to dedicate a very meaningful song to you. It’s sung in Taiwanese and you may not understand any of it. The lyrics have touched my heart the first time I heard them. This summer will mark our tenth wedding anniversary, we certainly have a very long way to go. I hope my English translation can show you just how much you mean to me, to our family.
Happy Birthday, my dearest!

Someday, when we are old and gray, and that our sons are no longer with us.

I will accompany you and sit by your side, listen to the tall tales from your
younger days.

I have never been discrete in how we dined, nor have I grasped the concept of
complaining.

You hand, is what I will hold on to very firmly, simply because I am your wife.

With our exchanged vows, I have dedicated my youthfulness to you.

I shall walk alone your side into our golden years.

I have seen and experienced much in life, there is no one more precious than you.

I have devoted my life to you, and I have understood the true meaning of
happiness sometimes lies in our quarrels.

When our last days are finally here, I,m willing to let you go first.

It’s because, I don’t want you to be tormented have I departed first.

One day in our golden years, with our sons and daughters in law all around us.

I will browse through our wedding photos with you, and tell you just how handsome
you were.

I have never asked for fancy wardrobe, nor have I understood the idea behind
nagging.

Your heart, is what I will always cling to so dearly, only because I am your wife.

When our last days are finally here, please allow me to go first.

It’s because, I don’t want to see you shed tears for me, while I watch you from
above.

Home Sweet Home (5)

As I sat in my car looking through the few snap shots I had taken, my cell phone began to buzz. Another old buddy had left me a text message saying that he was watching a football game down the street from the McD’s. William is a few years younger than I am, he has always been like a little brother to me. We used play basketball together right after we had finished working the graveyard shift.

Within minutes I was at the sports bar where William and several of his friends were hanging out. If I hadn’t seen his recent photos prior to my trip, there was no
way I could have recognized him at the bar. My “little” brother isn’t little anymore. My memory of Chilly Willy – as we all called him, was this scrawny kid, as thin as rail. The friendly smiles looked exactly the same as I remembered, only he had bulked up over the years. I mean he had bulked up A LOT!

William had prior engagement with his friends and couldn’t meet with us. I told him it was all right, there would be a next time. We chatted for several minutes before we parted our ways. “Take care, bro!” we said to each other, just like we used to in the old days. We both look forward to our next reunion.

It was close to 5:30 pm by the time I drove back to my sister’s place. She was busy prepping dinner with my mom as her assistant. I remembered my mom used to cook up a storm in the kitchen entertaining family friends. This trait of hospitality definitely runs in our family. My sister often hosts Thanksgiving, Christmas dinners and seasonal BBQ outings. “有朋自遠方來, 不亦樂乎 seems to be our family motto. I’m very fortunate to have a wife that also enjoys cooking as much as hosting.

I was playing with my nephew and niece when my sister informed me, that my younger brother was on his way down for a visit. What a pleasant surprise! I hadn’t seen my bother since he last visited us with mom back in ’08. Although the day was winding down, it was still getting better!

My dear sister cooked up a big pot of beef noodle soup (紅燒牛肉麵) for me, one
of my favorite food items. All the ingredients were freshly picked from her
garden. Come to think of it, I wondered what she used to fertilize them? I’m
not going to ask!

My brother and a friend of his arrived while I was in the shower. We chatted a little before we sat down for dinner. It had been several years since we had a dinner like this, the three of us and our mom. It would have been nice if dad were still around.

After the hearty dinner, we spent our evening in casual conversations and some good laughs when my nephew schooled my brother in Wii tennis games. It was absolutely a very delightful evening. Somehow, I couldn’t help but thought about my sons back home and my wife up in Palm Springs. I called up my old lady and gave her a briefing on the day’s activities.

I spent the next day and a half at my sister’s, just hanging out with the “old ladies” – my mom and my sister. I accompanied my nephew to his karate class on evening. I still remembered giving him baths when he was just a baby. I applauded to my niece when she played a few songs for me on her piano. Too bad our sons weren’t there with us, the kids would have a riot together.

Time flies when you are having fun! Very quickly, Tuesday had arrived. I was set to head back to Palm Springs in the early afternoon. You don’t want to get stuck in the rush hour traffic in Southern Cal. That was why I decided to drive back in the early afternoon. I said goodbye to my mom, she was teary as usual. This tiny lady had raised me and instilled the family values in me. I gave her a big hug and told her that we would all be back to see her again soon.

The clouds were gathering and looked as if it was going to rain. Luckily it didn’t. The crazy drivers on the road simply can’t drive in the rain. I must have switched to my lead foot on my way back. I found myself arriving in Palm Springs just shy of 80 minutes. To my surprise, my wife was in our hotel room surfing the web. Apparently there was an intermission of some sort. She had to go back at around 4 pm for the prize drawing. She showed me the loot bags with all the goodies she had gotten from various vendors. Quite a collection my must say.

“Wouldn’t it be nice if you win the trip to come back again next year?” I said to my wife. It’d be even nicer if this conference is held closer to San Diego County. I headed to the shower as my wife left to check on her luck at the prize drawing. I sat on the sofa with my feet up after the shower. This four-day R&R session couldn’t have come at a better time! It wasn’t long before my wife returned from the drawing, well, she didn’t win this time. It was OK, no big deal. We spent the evening strolling around Downtown Palm Springs. We browsed through several restaurants, they were all very expensive!

We finally settled on where we wanted to have dinner, a somewhat upscale pizza place. We shared an appetizer and a couple of entrees. It was very nice and relaxing for once. Usually we are busy getting food for our sons before we start on our own plate. I told my wife more in detail about my SD trip. She also gave me a run down on her 4 day conference, she had one more day to go on this trip. It would have been perfect if she didn’t have any business agenda. But you know, I’m not going to complain.

My flight back (to Indy) was early next morning. My dearest dropped me off at the airport, not far from the hotel. The connecting flight from Phoenix to Indy was only 2 ½ hours, I should be at home by 5 pm. As I sat in my seat, I looked through all the photos I had taken. I smiled, chuckled, just trying to soak it all in.

Right before the plane had landed, I was reminded that we were in the middle of winter. The swaying palm trees could not be found anymore. What greeted me was a winter wonderland. I was picked up at the airport by our good friends – the couple who looked after our sons the weekend before. One of them was also a S. Cal. transplant. I was very glad to find out that our sons had behaved very well. One thing for sure, our kids are very easy to feed. They devour pretty much anything you cook for them.

The four o’clock commute from the airport wasn’t too bad – to my surprise. We arrived at our house just before 5 pm. I thanked them for the ride home and told them that we would be seeing them soon. I didn’t spend any time unpacking as I went straight to my car. It might sound corny but I really missed my sons.

I hurried to our neighbor’s place to pick them up. I told our neighbor that we were very thankful that they had agreed to host our boys for three days. Well, she got compensated for it but nevertheless, it was a big favor. I could tell that my older son was happy to see me. I asked my younger son, “Are you happy to see baba again?” “Ah” was his reply. I didn’t care, I hugged them and ushered them to the car.

Our sons had a great time with our friends as well as our neighbor’s family. As I was preparing dinner for the three of us, a warm feeling crept up on me.

Home sweet home!

Home Sweet Home (4)

My second meet-up for the afternoon really brought back some old memories. It is easily one of the most memorable periods in my life. Of the 6 old friends I was
meeting with, 4 of them I hadn’t seen since high school graduation in the mid
80’s. Roy, Karin and their daughter were among the guests at our wedding
reception, which was almost 10 years ago.

I wouldn’t say that I was getting nervous about meeting my old friends, perhaps a little anxious. I actually didn’t attend the same high school with any of them. What
had brought us together was that we had all worked at the same McDonald’s
restaurant. Call this a McCrew reunion if you will.

I didn’t know who would show up and who would take a rain check. Roy and Karin did respond to my email, that they would come with their children, all four of them now. I still feel bad about not being able to attend their wedding reception. I was on a business trip in Japan. Nevertheless, Roy and I are still like brothers to this day, and William, too.

It was a short drive from the Starbucks where I said goodbye to Grace, to the McDonald’s where I was to meet my old pals. I had about 10 minutes to spare when I pulled into the parking lot. The old store looked quite different on the outside. A pergola now covers much of the west entrance. A cascading pond now sits in front of the store; it used to be a grassy area. Once upon a time, a skinny
Taiwanese boy used to roam this parking lot. You see, my first job there was a
janitor.

I remembered the brown polyester jumpsuit, then the pin-stripe uniform and paper hat. Speaking of which, I really need to put away those old photos so my sons won’t ever find them. I’m not ashamed of being a janitor in my teens, but those ugly uniforms! Is “grotesque” the right word to describe them? I walked into the very store where I had spent my high school years, only I couldn’t recognize it!

Gone, are the sectioned dining areas. Out, are the rigid benches and swivel metal seats. The interior now bears resemblance of an upscale coffee shop or hotel lounge. There are tall bookshelves, sofas and a coffee table. Wow! Contemporary
furniture is elegantly laid out in the large dining area. I blinked a few times just to make sure my vision wasn’t deceiving me.

“Wow!” I repeated a few more times as I sat down and gazed out the large windows with the Golden Arches. This place was almost like a second home to me. I had pedaled the 5 mile stretch from home to the store for almost 2 years until I
got my first car. I had to battle two hills in order to get to work, rain or shine.

At around ten after 2 pm, a somewhat familiar figure walked into the store, followed by two teenage kids. It didn’t take me long to recognize that big smile – trade mark of the Garcia sisters. My last recollections of Christy paused sometime between ’86 & ’87. Now a mother of two, both her son and her daughter tower over her.

We gave each other a big hug then Christy introduced me to her kids. She told me about her husband but for some reason I just couldn’t remember him. Teri arrived shortly after, then Roy, Karin and their sons. We exchanged hugs and greeted each other before sitting down. I looked at my old friends; it was as if we had warped through time, skipping over two decades.

We have all added some gray hair, gained a few pounds. We aren’t the fresh faced youngsters anymore. We talked about our families, our jobs, friends we had known in the past. Just then, Trace walked through the door. I had lost contact with her; it was Teri whom she had kept in touch.

If you think only a group of teens would have a lot to talk about, I have a big surprise for you. Our 40-something Club never did run out of topics. The time capsule really led us back to some nostalgic, fond memories. We certainly had a lot of catching up to do.

I went to the front counter to order a drink. I looked at the cashier; she looked about the same age I was when I first started working there. I could tell the kitchen area had been totally revamped as well. I told her that my friends and I had worked at the store over 20 years ago, her eyes widened. Perhaps 20 years from now, there will be another group of 40-something, sitting and chatting about their good ‘ol days.

We really had a great time seeing one another, chit-chatting and catching up the “lost” years. I proposed another reunion in 2011, perhaps a picnic at the beach, a
bonfire or something. One thing for sure, we won’t wait another 20 years before
our next reunion. All great parties must come to an end, this one was no exception.

I stayed and watched my friends leave one by one. “What a day this has been!”, I thought to myself. Seeing my mom, my sister and her family; meeting a new friend and some long lost friends all in the same day. This trip was not only worthwhile, it was long overdue!

Home Sweet Home (3)

It was hard to imagine that just two days ago almost the entire Southern California was drenched by heavy downpour. Several areas in Los
Angeles actually flooded. “Seems it never rains in Southern California”
suddenly came to mind as I paid a visit to my sister’s veggie garden. It’s just
outside the guest bedroom where I stayed.

"It never rains in California. But girl, don’t they warn ya. It pours man it pours." I hummed to myself. The rain for sure provided a life-reviving dosage to the backyard and the veggie patch; evident by the eye-pleasing green right in front of me. My dear sister has always had a soft spot of animals, especially for dogs. Her last German shepherd "Kuma" had dug up the yard several years ago. Kuma’s handy work can still be seen all around the back and side yard. They don’t have a dog now; instead, there are two cages of homing pigeons. Ah, good ‘ol memories.

Over the years, my family had had many different house pets in Taiwan. Dogs, tropical fish, Brazilian turtles, hermit crabs, baby crocodile, monkeys, owls . (I’m not making this up, baby croc, monkeys and owls!) Can silkworms be counted as pets? My sister mentioned that a couple of her pigeons were snatched up by the hawks. I suggested that we BBQ the pigeons before the hawks got to them all. Oh, after a few years without a dog, she is having an itch again. An itch only a German shepherd pup can scratch.

10:35 am, time to hit the road! I was to meet with Grace for lunch. I was a member of an online English learning forum a few months back. Grace is one of the friends
I’ve gotten acquainted with from the forum. We chatted one day and found out
that we were actually "neighbors". We used live within a few miles from Grace’s current residence. Like myself, Grace has been living in the US for ages years.

Meeting a new friend for lunch, what a noble idea! Too bad my wife had to stay in Palm Springs for her evening conference commencement concession. “Super Bowl” was what I had in mind. No, not the Super Bowl as in American football; but a large
bowl of Vietnamese beef and noodle soup – phở.

Grace was running a little late but I didn’t mind. I browsed around the supermarket where the restaurant sat adjacent to. The surroundings sure had changed quite a bit but not beyond recognition. Shortly after 11 am Grace arrived. We had (text) chatted on a few occasions so the face-to-face meeting was a first. How did I know it was her? (& vice versa) Easy, Facebook mug shots!

We greeted each other then headed inside the restaurant. I could tell she was quite laid-back after a brief conversation. From her blog I had learned that life had thrown her for a few loops, yet, she had never backed down. For those who wonder just how to pick a conversation topic – you don’t. Whatever comes to mind is a good topic. Why settle on “a” topic when you can have a “range” of topics?

We chit chatted over the course of our meal. We talked about our families and things in general. We are both very family-oriented that we talked about our significant other and our kids. I wondered if my wife’s ear got itchy all of a sudden? Yeah dear, I was talking about you behind your back. There were all good
things, I promise.

We continued our conversation in three flavors, Mandarin, Taiwanese and English in no particular order. I have to admit though, my Taiwanese is horrible! We carried
the chat session at a Starbucks after lunch; just across the street from the Vietnamese restaurant. Two and a half hours flew by very quickly. My 2 o’clock appointment was fast approaching. All in all, it was a wonderful first meeting with Grace. Hopefullywe can introduce our respective families to each other on our next visit.
